Lexical H*+L pitch accent in Ryukyuan: Diversities in phonological patterning and phonetic manifestation
نویسنده
چکیده
Lexical pitch accent languages such as Swedish and Japanese have been claimed to exhibit variation in phonological inventory and/or phonetic manifestation of pitch accents. This paper reports variations in the phonetic manifestation as well as phonological patterning of the lexical H*+L pitch accent in two Ryukyuan dialects – Shuri and Nakijin. The F0 manifestation of H*+L pitch accent in the two dialects was examined with reference the phonetic evidence reported for Japanese in previous studies. The results showed that Shuri and Nakijin dialects have two entirely different types of F0 manifestation for their H*+L accent regarding the timing of F0 and accented mora, pitch range, and the behavior of postaccent Ls. Furthermore, both the occurrence and distribution of the H*+L accent in Nakijin are limited while it is not in Shuri dialect.

Phonetic invariance and phonological stability: lithuanian pitch accents
We argue that phonetically invariant realizations of phonological categories imply the synchronic and diachronic imperviousness of such categories to phonological rules and sound laws. We claim that phonetic invariance is the foundation of phonological stability. The category we discuss in this contribution is the pitchaccent. We provide a parametric phonetic description of this phonological ca...
متن کاملPhonetic and phonological properties of the final pitch accent in Catalan declaratives
This paper examines the phonetic and phonological properties of the last pitch accent in Catalan single and multi-stressed neutral declaratives. Traditionally, the different F0 patterns observed in single stressed structures (clear F0 peak) and in multistressed structures (progressively falling slope or a strongly lowered F0 peak) have been subject to different phonological interpretations (H* ...
متن کاملThe Phonetic Realization of Pitch Accent in Huave*
0. Introduction Huave is a language isolate spoken in four villages on the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico: San Mateo, San Francisco, San Dionisio, and Santa María. This paper examines the pitch accent system in the San Mateo dialect, the only dialect which has preserved lexical tone. In this paper, “pitch accent” is used broadly to refer to the interaction of lexical tone and phrasal accent (see Hyman...
متن کامل‘Stress Accent’ without Phonetic Stress: Accent Type and Distribution in Bininj Gun-wok
Intonational typology has recently begun to scrutinize the typology of accent beyond the common binary distinction of ‘stress accent’ and ‘pitch accent’ (or ‘non-stress’ accent). Contributing to this research, this study considers the phonetic correlates of accent and its patterns of distribution in the Kuninjku dialect of Bininj Gun-wok (BGW), a polysynthetic language spoken in Northern Austra...

1. Introduction Beckman (1986) draws a distinction between stress-accent and non-stress-accent (i.e., pitch-accent) languages. Stress-accent languages, such as English, convey accentual prominence by a combination of phonetic cues, including pitch, intensity and duration. Non-stress-accent languages, on the other hand, use only pitch as a correlate of accent. Tokyo Japanese is an example of the...
